"Have you ever looked back and realized that your project was doomed from the beginning? Well that NEVER needs to happen to you again. BEFORE you jump in and start wildly creating a new product or service or enhancing your favorite system, make sure you really understand what it is you and your team are promising. And since you are going to ask your team to work hard, make sure they know why." Margaret Meloni

7 Things YOU Need to Set YOUR Project Up for Success

If you want to get your project started on the right track, then there are a few things you need to know. Each of these items help you gain clarity around exactly what it is you and your team need to accomplish.

Remember:

"If you don't know where you are going, any road will take you there" - Lewis Carroll

  1. Purpose Statement – What are you doing on this project and why are you doing it? Why should company resources be used for this effort?
  2. Scope Statement – What is the work required to meet project objectives?
  3. Deliverables – What will the project produce? Along the way to your end result you will create things like blueprints or training materials.
  4. Cost and Schedule Estimates – You will probably NOT be working with unlimited time and money, so let’s get those expectations out in the open now.
  5. Measures of Success – When the project is over, how do you know if you and your team were successful?
  6. Stakeholders – Who are the people or groups who will influence your project? Know them and the roles that they will play.
  7. Chain of Command/Authority – Are you allowed to hire resources, give them assignments, write reviews?  Who makes project decisions? The team needs to understand this from the start.
